Keeping My Cool

by Kristin on August 21, 2010

in This and That

It’s the 20th or so straight day of 100 degree (or more!) days here in Dallas.  Grass is turning brown, flowers are drying on their stems, and leaves are getting brown-edged.  Walking from the grocery store to the car feels a bit as though one has entered a blast furnace.  It’s hot.  It is said that just looking at water can make one feel cooler.  I do not know whether this is scientifically true, but I definitely feel refreshed every time my eye catches this arrangement in my bathroom.  Yes, my bathroom.  Why not have an arrangement in a room where you will see it often and enjoy it always?  Two of these great glass containers were picked up at a local shop for a song, and the little one on the left was “upcycled” from its previous incarnation as a flavored oil container.  The greenery was cut from my potted plants and wisteria.  Best of all, this little trio has lasted over 6 weeks.  Such a deal, as we used to say in New Jersey.  And so very cool.

I’d love to hear what keeps you cool in the dog days of summer…

I’m impressed – 6 weeks ! Roots yet, ha ha!! Refreshing look.
This heat is suffocating. (Houston) Our pool is no relief as it is a nice warm temp now.
There is nothing we can do but wait it out I suppose. My energy is zapped to the point I don’t venture outside much to tend to the exhausted plants. I figure if the sprinklers and occasional rain shower can’t get them through the heat, then they are doomed anyway.
We had 2 Pygmy Palms die because of the freeze and now I’m worried about their replacements making it through the heat. Who would have guessed we’d have those worries in Texas !! Looking forward to Round Top and hoping the heat is not an issue. Nothing like a sweltering day to end a shopping trip.

Love your bathroom window treatment. The heat has finally broken in NC and I am spending more time outdoors and in the lake.

A few years ago we were working in North Africa (south of the Atlas Mts and into the Sahara Desert). The month of August was particularly difficult for us as daily temps were 50-52*C (122-125.6*F), and we had no air conditioning. We began our days with the sunrise, took numerous cool showers, ran cool water over our wrists and dabbed it under our ears, ate cold meals, had mid-day siestas, and prayed for relief. Hope this heatwave will soon end for all of you. R
