The Story of a House, Part 1

in This and That

We have always been renovators.  Serious renovators.  Such renovators that I had to wait for the paint contractor to get off my home phone to call my doctor when I was in labor with number one son – before cell phone days!  Such renovators that we brought sweet daughter home to a house cloaked in sheet rock dust because they broke through a wall while I was in the hospital.  Such renovators that son number two also came home from the hospital to workmen in the house.  Son number three was born under a lucky star – we were too tired from raising children to be renovating inside, but we had moved our attention to the gardens outside.  We bought and renovated our house in London at my husband’s insistence that I would need something to “do” while we were there.  You get the picture.

When we decided to move to Dallas, I decided that I did not want to renovate another house.  I wanted to be able to move to a new city and spend time with new friends at Starbucks, rather than Ann Sacks.  Famous last words!  We looked everywhere for a house that didn’t need much other than a coat of paint.  We looked at gorgeous homes, but 5 bedrooms and an elevator for my daughter’s wheelchair were not easy to find.  So, we decided to build.  We bought a beautiful lot, met with our architect – more about him later- and got going on the plans, all while we were still living in London in the sweet house below.

We went on a ski trip with friends to France, and we drove.  They were horrified that we would DRIVE when we could fly, but it was serendipity.  We stayed in Beaune, a wonderful little city in Burgundy, and fell in love with its architecture.  We shot tons of photos and sent them to our architect as our inspiration.  Now this is truly ironic, because we had lived in two very English style homes previously – I adored the English style, and the French, not so much.  If you had told me that a French village would be our stylistic influence, I would have laughed.  But look at the wonderful details below – irresistable to us….

Here is our “French vernacular” house.  That’s what the architect calls it, as it is distinctly French, but not time period or region bound.

What a beautiful home! My husband and I are thinking about building a home, as we can’t find anything that really speaks to us in existing construction, so I am reading every word with fascination!

You have a beautiful home, I can’t wait to see more of it (and read about your inspiration for the design choices in the home!).

Thank you so much. I love reading your blog. Building our house was definitely an adventure, and I’ll share more of it over time. Hopefully it won’t discourage you from doing the same! Seriously, we love our home and the process was worth it in the end.
